Starting January 8, 2025, travelers from North America, Israel, Singapore, the Caribbean, Oceania, and certain countries in Africa, Central, and South America will require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the United Kingdom. By March, travelers from selected European countries and their associated territories will also be eligible to apply for an ETA. Designed to enhance pre-departure security checks, ETAs are digitally linked to your passport. Here's everything you need to know to ensure a smooth journey to the UK.
How to Apply for an ETA and What It Costs
You can apply for an ETA online or via the UK ETA app. Before starting, have your passport and a payment method ready. The application fee is £10. If applying online, you can submit an application on behalf of someone else. However, when using the app, the individual must be present so you can take their photo.
Who Needs an ETA?
Every citizen of the specified countries and territories, including infants and children, must obtain an ETA to enter the UK.
Processing Time for an ETA
You can expect a response within approximately three days. If traveling in a group, be aware that responses may arrive at different times for each individual.
Validity of an ETA
An ETA is valid for two years, allowing multiple trips to the UK during that period, with each stay capped at six months. If you get a new passport within those two years, you'll need to apply for a new ETA.
